My name is Cathrin Hurth and I’m a final-semester industrial engineering student at the University of Applied Sciences in Bingen am Rhein, majoring in agriculture and the environment. I completed my bachelor’s degree in agriculture at the same university, and am currently doing an internship in digital marketing at Bayer Business Services in Leverkusen.
Alongside the industrial engineering aspects of the agriculture and environment specialist subjects, the industrial engineering course at Bingen also includes management-related subjects such as marketing and international business. This combination offers a range of opportunities for students to progress as they choose and undertake internships to build on what they have studied during their bachelor’s and master’s programs. This is why I decided to complete a three-month internship before starting my master’s thesis.
Digital marketing and agriculture – what’s the connection?
The Bayer name is well known throughout the agricultural industry for its innovative crop protection solutions and seed concepts. As a result, I actually decided on the Group very quickly, and started looking for an internship there. On the basis of the speculative application I uploaded to the careers portal, a recruiter brought my attention to the digital marketing internship for Bayer CropScience. I was quick to act, as I wanted to get involved in marketing and was very interested in the combination of IT and agriculture. After all, digitization is very much on the rise in the agricultural sector, too, and will continue to be of key importance in the future. I therefore applied for the place that had been advertised, and was then invited to a telephone interview and then a face-to-face one, which also included a presentation.
Working with the digital marketing team
The Bayer Business Services digital marketing department is spread across the Berlin, Leverkusen and Monheim sites. The teams provide an in-house consulting service to support the HealthCare and CropScience subgroups with digital marketing. Some of the core responsibilities include advising the marketing teams at the various national companies on how to implement digital marketing strategies, monitoring the application of these measures and evaluating their success. Thanks to this diverse working environment, the internship offers a great deal of variety, both in terms of the international aspect of it and the range of different projects. Another great plus-point is that interns are directly involved in activities and included in projects right from the start. This has given us the opportunity to gain direct insight into project work and make a real contribution to projects.
Thanks to my background in agriculture, I’ve been able to help my colleagues with several CropScience projects and work with the team to develop new ideas for supporting farmers. In this area of work, it is definitely an advantage to have experience and be interested in agriculture, as this helps maintain a strong link to farmers. I’ve also very much enjoyed the connections between intelligent IT solutions and the practical side of agriculture. The agricultural sector can really benefit from these innovative solutions – a perfect combination of digital marketing and agriculture!
An internship with a high level of variety
The way that interns are integrated into the team has been excellent. We’ve been directly involved in what’s going on, and even had the opportunity to take part in workshops in Berlin and get to know our colleagues there better. I was also able to build on the link between IT and practical agriculture by visiting farmers near Leipzig. Keeping a practical focus has been a priority at several other events. Another highlight is that special afternoons are organized on a regular basis so that interns can get to know the company better and meet interns in other departments.
To conclude, I would say that I’ve been able to gain a great deal of experience and insight over the past three months. I would also like to thank all my colleagues for this exciting time and the many interesting tasks involved. It’s been great fun being part of this team. All in all, I would recommend the internship to any student who finds innovative solutions inspiring!
