We have a very special surprise for you this week. We asked four interns what they wore to their interviews with Bayer and whether they have noticed any particular dress code during their internships. You can find the exclusive answers from Kala, Johanna, Phuong and Louisa in a four-part series on our career blog.
Department: Global Mobility
Your department’s function:
At Global Mobility, we take care of the foreign assignments of various Bayer employees all over the world.
Did you notice any kind of dress code in the company during your internship?
Not in general, no. Bayer has more than 115,000 employees, 301 companies and numerous departments. Every department handles the issue of dress code differently, ranging from more casual to very formal, and there is no such thing as THE perfect outfit. Nonetheless, it would be wise to follow one or two tips in an interview so as to emphasize your personality and expertise with the appropriate outfit.
What is that outfit you are showing us?
The outfit I’m wearing in the photo is not what I wore to my interview here. I wanted to use this to show you what you might wear to an interview at Bayer for a department where employees are likely to wear shirts and ties, like Consulting or the Legal Department, for example.
What was the thinking behind your choice of outfit?
I chose a very conventional outfit – a dark blue suit. The simplicity and the discreet colors give me confidence. It is important to wear it with a shirt that is tailored properly to your figure. I wear a slim-fit cut, and had my collar size measured properly in a specialist shop. I also selected a discreet tie. When I tied it, I made sure it was neither too long nor too short, but that the tip just reached the top of my belt. Stay conventional with the shape of your collar, too, so avoid wearing a button-down with a tie, for example. If you close your jacket, make sure you only do up the top button.
One last thing – to avoid showing off bare ankles, make sure your socks are long enough that they won’t fall down while you are sitting!
My dark blue suit. Perfect for interviews, but also for other special events such as weddings or graduation.
