My name is Melanie Stimac and I’m in the final semester of a master’s degree in International Management at Bochum University of Applied Sciences. Before that, I also got a bachelor’s degree in International Business & Management in German and Spanish at Bochum University. I chose marketing and market management as majors on both programs. At Bayer, I don’t just have the opportunity to explore these subjects in greater depth but also to write my master’s thesis in digital marketing.
Head start thanks to online profile
It’s a mistake to think speculative applications won’t get you anywhere. I created a profile on the Bayer career portal and noted that I was interested in an internship and master’s thesis in marketing. Just a very short time later, I got a call from a recruiter who asked whether I’d be interested in an internship in digital marketing. I was pleasantly surprised and enthusiastic – I hadn’t thought my speculative application would get such a fast response – and in a subject I find so interesting! I know that combining innovations in the technology sector with traditional marketing is a growing trend, making this professional experience exactly the right thing for my career. That’s why I first did a three-month orientation internship before following this up with writing my master’s thesis in the department.
Varied insights in the internship
The digital marketing team is divided between the three sites in Leverkusen, Monheim and Berlin and is a competent, strategic partner in digital marketing matters for all Bayer companies. The team provides support in developing digital marketing strategies through to implementation and performance monitoring. As an intern, you also deal with projects and jobs from the various country companies on a day-to-day basis, so you don’t just learn about project work but also about working in a global environment. This has also enabled me to find out about the international component of my studies at Bayer in a practical setting. I discovered how important it is to adapt marketing to country-specific circumstances and target groups. At the start of the internship, my supervisor discussed my knowledge and interests with me. We used this as a basis for formulating my responsibilities. In my work at Bayer, I often recognize parallels with my studies that develop from theory into practice.
As several interns are always working in digital marketing at Bayer at the same time, projects are also assigned to us interns as “joint projects”, which is something we all really enjoy. This enables us to work as a team on interesting and challenging tasks and share a variety of different kinds of expertise thanks to our various courses of study.
Master’s thesis combined with practical work
During the first three months of my internship, I was on the look-out for possible topics for my master’s thesis. This involved me having several conversations with my colleagues who supervise various projects. My supervisor was very open about the choice of topic, which made organization far easier. The only requirement was that it should also create added value for the department. I found a whole number of interesting topics and finally decided to write about the “Development of a KPI framework for awareness and engagement in digital marketing at Bayer Business Services GmbH.”
What’s great is that half of my working time is devoted to my master’s thesis, so I can write it in my workplace and am in direct contact with my colleagues if I have any questions but can also continue to work on other interesting projects and gain further work experience.
Finally, I can say I’ve already acquired some fantastic experience here at Bayer and still have exciting things to look forward to. It’s the combination of internship and master’s thesis in particular that completes the overall picture for me. I would advise every student to take the opportunity to send a speculative application as well as applying for an advertised position in order to increase their chances of being hired. This is also sometimes the best method if no suitable job is being advertised at a particular moment.
